Celestial stories

The aim of this section is to introduce astronomical articles and inspiring pictures published in newspapers and magazines. The articles are often short, passing on the information of an observed natural phenomenon or a new finding. In addition to the articles based on facts, the published stories may also include inspired events and human explanations based on imagination, as well as models for implementing new ideas. In history, there are countless examples of such. An idea, at first thought to be impossible, starts to live its own life. The original crazy plan has come true; if not in its first form, as an improved version of the basic idea. The most well-known examples of these kinds of procedures are the space travels and flights to the Moon. In addition to the stories, many publications also include information on the workshops with instructions for immediate use in teaching.

The picture shows the planet Jupiter with three of its four Galilei moons, photographed through a telescope. This is a picture without any processing, typically taken by an amateur photographer. It is worthwhile to encourage the students to use whatever means they have of photographing the sky. With their experience piling up, the results get better and the joy of successfully taking photos enhances their willingness to more explorations (picture IH, Finland).
